I’m ok out of the sand, but after a particularly bad day out of the sand I was looking for something better. I remember watching the Phoenix Waste Management and noticed Phil Mickelson was using a Ping Eye2 Lob Wedge. It was pretty evident that these clubs are about as ugly a club as you will see, and this is from someone who begged for Ping Eye2 clubs back in the day. My dad eventually bought me the Ping Eye2s upon my completing the Eagle Scout award, and I loved them… But back to the topic.
I watched in fascination as Phil used this club from various lies around the green and out of the sand trap. Phil is known as a master of the short game, so I figured for him to use something other than a Callaway wedge really means a special club. Long story short, I bought one. I can’t say I really love it for any approach shot, in fact I would rather take my changes with a 3.4 56 degree than a full Eye2 Lob wedge, but around the green in difficult lies the club is quite amazing. You only need to open the club a fraction to benefit from amazing bounce and control. The best part of the club, however, is in the sand. It is cheating. I have hit it now from traps with little sand and from traps with 4 inches of fluffy sand, and I can get it out with really no effort. I don’t have to worry about how much sand I take or how far behind the ball I enter the sand (within reason); it just performs. Open the club face slightly, then throw the club into the sand behind the ball and watch the ball magically pop out. I don’t get up and down out of the sand every time now, but I enter a sand trap knowing that I will have a reasonable putt for a sand save, which is a great feeling.
The Ping Eye2 is highly recommended as a utility club around the green, out of thick rough, etc., but it is unmatched, in my opinion, as a sand trap specialty club.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! -DrA
